Prince William County received two awards for local programs in a statewide competition that recognizes excellence in government service.
Virginia Association of Counties officials will formally present the two 2009 Achievement Awards to supervisors in November, during the annual VACO conference.
"The first winning program," said acting county executive Susan Roltsch, "was Home Help … for helping to bolster a struggling real estate market and simultaneously providing the employee workforce with tax incentives" to purchase a home locally.
The program -- which benefits teachers, police and parks employees -- went forth at no cost to the taxpayer, Roltsch reminded.
"It is a public-private partnership made possible, in part, by investing a portion of the county's investment portfolio in collateralized certificates of deposit with SunTrust bank," according to a printed summary sheet of the awards.
The second award was for the county's Virtual Public Hearing Program.
"Prince William County citizens have hectic daily schedules that include long commutes … that do not easily allow them to participate in critical public hearings," Roltsch said.
As such, county staffers created an online site to make "critical information on the county's planning and development process [readily] available," according to written summaries of the awards.
The VACO awards are competitive. The organization received 72 submissions and of those, only 15 programs around the state were given Achievement Awards.
