When the City of Manassas shut down its Recreation and Parks Department last December, the city lost an advocate for recreation. Since then the small non-profit organization, Recreation Manassas, Inc., has attempted to fill the gap by promoting recreation in our community.
It has held an annual summer fundraising event at Stonewall Park Pool, called the Austin Haynes Swim-A-Thon, and partnered with the Boys & Girls Club in a citywide basketball tournament last fall.
Recreation Manassas is committed to raising private funds and advocating for bike trails, scholarships to summer camps, family-centered recreation events, expanded facilities at local parks, and enhancements to Stonewall Park Pool, such as the Sprayground, a zero-depth water park, ideal for toddlers, non-swimmers and the disabled. Monies raised are set aside for City capital projects, so this is a true public-private partnership.
Recreation Manassas needs volunteers — like-minded citizens who care about quality of life issues and support recreation not only for children but for the entire family and who know that this crucial part of community life is necessary for the city to thrive, to attract families and businesses, and to provide an avenue for health and well-being of its citizens. Our goal is to continue to raise an awareness at City Council meetings.
Without active community involvement, maintenance of the Stonewall Park Pool, events like the Stonewall Jackson 5K Run (just held on Oct. 24), or even the city’s limited staff support of recreation and parks may be de-funded. Let’s not let this happen. Let’s fight for recreation in this city.
