Two Haymarket Town Council members move from area

Haymarket needs to fill two empty seats on its town council.

Haymarket Town Council members Oswald Vazquez and Susan Shuryn resigned at the council's November meeting.

Vazquez and Shuryn, who are married, resigned because they are moving out of their area, Town Manager Gene Swearingen said.

Swearingen said the pair sold their house in the town in late October.

In a statement posted on the town's Web site, town officials said: "The Town would like to thank Ozzie and Sue for their public service and wish them both the best."

Vazquez and Shuryn submitted their letters of resignation on Nov. 2. The council has 60 days to appoint their replacements, Swearingen said.

"The council made a public request for residents to express interest in serving," Swearingen said.

The deadline to submit a written statement of interest is Dec. 1.

As of this week, four Haymarket residents have submitted letters of interest, Swearingen said.

The council will consider the applicants at their meeting on Dec. 7.

"They may choose to make appointments at that time or they may wait until the January meeting," Swearingen said.

Those selected will serve the remainder of Vazquez's and Shuryn's terms, which end in June 2010.

Residents of the town of Haymarket who are interested in serving on the Town Council can send written statements of their interest to the town clerk, Jennifer Preli, by e-mail to jpreli@townofhaymarket.org, by fax to 703-753-2800, or in person at 14710 Washington St.
