Virginia Gov. Timothy M. Kaine today unveiled an investment of $200 million by a nonprofit medical research institute expected to generate more than 400 jobs in Northern Virginia.
The Ignite Institute will focus on biomedical research and medical technology advances to enhance the practice of personalized medicine in a community health setting, according to the governor's office.
The institute was established by the nonprofit Inova Health System and Dr. Dietrich Stephan, a leading specialist in molecular medicine. It will initially be located at the Center for Innovative Technology in Fairfax.
Kaine said the establishment of the institute "adds to Virginia's position as a world-class center of excellence for research and development," and would help reform and enhance healthcare in the U.S.
The governor was joined at a press briefing in Northern Virginia by Gov.-elect Bob McDonnell.
