What is meant by a “snuff” movie? Are there such films, or is it an urban legend? A snuff film is a motion picture genre that depicts the actual death or murder of a person or people, without the aid of
special effects, for profit and entertainment.
On the Internet one can find free pictures and videos depicting the actual death or murder of a person or people. They are called “shock sites,” and there are many. The average person is not going to be
drawn to such material.
However, there is definitely a niche for it. Some of the most popular sites displaying such material can attract thousands of hits a day. There are many graphically violent sites on the Internet. These
sources rely on contributors who submit their pictures and video. One can look at pictures or see video footage of murder, suicides, self mutilation, rape, fatal traffic accidents, etc. The list is endless.
People are leaking these images to sites. A disturbed person no longer necessarily has to spend hundreds of dollars to purchase a “snuff” movie.
You can just jump on to the Internet and find it free. The only difference is that the “snuff” is not commercially made but reality-based footage caught by participants/onlookers with cell phone cameras and
video and “leaked” to sites.
This is reality, but should the content of the material be regulated/banned? Can it be banned?
Technology has superseded our moral values, making it virtually impossible to regulate the Internet and ban certain material. What if enough people turned away in the increasing violence/crime on the
Internet? What kind of society might we turn into? I hope we don’t get the chance to find out. Maybe to an extent we already have.
