The United States is the wealthiest nation in the world. We always strived to be number one, hence that is something to be proud of.
Our national pride can quickly turn to disbelief when we make a realistic assessment of some of the things that are happening. One does not have to be a space scientist to realize that some people in
our country are being poorly treated.
I was totally shocked when I learned that our Social Security recipients will not get a rate increase for 2010. I shook my head in utter belief! My concern is not personal, as I feel comfortable with what I
get. My concern is for those who are struggling to make ends meet. Some have to choose between food and medicine — they cannot do both. If my memory serves me correctly, some get as little as
$5,000 to $6,000 a year. This is a disgraceful situation, and it is being done by our government.
Let us contrast this to our United States Congress. They have set up an automatic system whereby they will get an increase each year. They have a high yearly salary, and some are even millionaires.
Are we being taken to the cleaners by those who are supposed to be looking after us? In essence, those in Congress are supposed to be our guardian angels — I don’t like the song they are singing.
Yes, we have the honor and privilege of voting, but after that our voices are rarely heard.
We are the greatest nation in the world, but we need to get much better. If it does not happen, we could face the same fate as the Holy Roman Empire. Greed is rampant in our country, so much related
to money. We need money, but how much do we need?
