I know all of the regulars at the Manassas Senior Center are missing friends that, because of lack of transportation, can no longer attend activities or programs.
On Monday, myself and two other concerned citizens had a very informative meeting with Brentsville District Supervisor Wally S. Covington III about transportation. It was a relief to hear that the supervisors are aware of the transportation issues at both the Manassas and Woodbridge centers, and are looking for ways to remedy the problem. Covington did however inform us that he has not heard much from his constitutes in reference to the problem, while the Woodbridge area supervisors have been inundated with public concern. It’s up to all the Manassas center members to let our elected officials know how we feel about the lack of transportation available for our seniors. I’m urging you all to contact Supervisor Covington (wcovington@pwcgov.org) and/or Gainesville Supervisor John T. Stirrup (gainesville@pwcgov.org). Let’s advise the Board of County Supervisors that we too are upset about the lack of transportation for our seniors.
Transportation to supervisors meeting
There will be a bus at the Manassas Senior Center at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday to take seniors to the Board of Supervisors meeting in the afternoon. The bus will go to the Woodbridge Center for pickup at 12:30 p.m. and will then travel to the McCord building for the meeting. Seniors are urged to let the supervisors hear their stories about how the elimination of low cost bus transportation has affected them and their families. Here’s our chance to let the supervisors know how we feel.
See ‘Dr. Dolittle’
The movie “Dr. Dolittle” will be shown at 11 a.m. Monday. Stop in, watch the movie and enjoy lunch with friends.
Covington’s annual holiday dinner
Starting Monday, reservations will be taken for Supervisor Wally S. Covington’s Annual Holiday Dinner. The dinner, which is taking place on Dec. 7, is always a big event, so get those reservations in early.
Craft workshops
The Pinecone Wreath workshop is also taking place Monday, starting at 9 a.m. The class size is limited so sign up at the reception desk as soon as possible. There is a fee of $3 to cover the cost of supplies. Participants are asked to bring any special decorations to make their wreath unique.
The Country Side Garden Club is offering a Fresh Evergreen Centerpiece workshop at 12:30 p.m. on Nov. 30. Class size is limited, so sign up early. There is a fee of $4 to cover the cost of supplies and attendees are asked to bring their own container.
Donate to gift baskets
Don’t miss the opportunity to donate for the Thanksgiving baskets being prepared by the Friends of the Manassas Senior Center. Tuesday is the last day to bring in non-perishable food or small personal care items — no glass containers please. Gift baskets will be assembled with each one including a grocery gift certificate. The Friends will deliver the baskets on Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving, to seniors who have been recommended by the Area Agency on Aging.
Happy Hoofers
The Happy Hoofers entertained at Birmingham Green on Tuesday. As always we enjoy it as much as the residents. This was the last performance for November and we are now dedicating our practices exclusively to our December Holiday Extravaganza. Following Tuesday’s performance, Joy and Norma were special guests at our November Birthday luncheon at Red Lobster.
The Manassas Senior Center is at 9320 Mosby St., Manassas. Call 703-792-6405.
