Database: Grocery Price Comparison
You don't have to take out a loan to afford Thanksgiving dinner this year. We've done our research for you to see which Prince William-area grocery store is offering the lowest prices on Turkey Day staples.
A team of News & Messenger reporters visited nine area supermarkets to compare prices for a common Thanksgiving dinner. The mission: to find the most economical way to feed your family a turkey din-ner.
Our grocery list included 10 items: frozen turkey, canned green beans, jarred gravy, canned cranberry sauce, stuffing mix, cream of mushroom soup, sweet potatoes, regular potatoes, frozen pumpkin pie and whipped topping.
We didn't look for brands, just the lowest prices. For the turkey and potatoes, we looked at price per pound. For the canned and frozen stuff, we just searched out whatever was cheapest.
The stores we visited included Super Walmart, Super Target, Wegmans, Bloom, Safeway, Giant, Harris Teeter, Shoppers Food Warehouse and Aldi.
After many hours of store visits, crunching numbers and double checking, we found our winner: Wegmans with a total of $8.38 for turkey by the pound and all the fixings. Super Walmart came in at second place. Safeway was the most expensive.
