A Lake Ridge girl is dead and a woman hospitalized after their car hit a tree on Interstate 95 in North Carolina on Tuesday.
The two crash victims, identified by police as sisters, were traveling south on the highway when their car veered into the center median and made contact with rumble strips, which are grooves in the pavement to alert drivers they have strayed out of their lanes, said North Carolina Highway Patrol Sgt. Jeff Gordon.
When the driver, 17-year-old Angelia Danielle Overton, pulled back into the left lane, she overcorrected and ran the car into a ditch, said Gordon. The car then collided with a tree.
Overton was killed, and 25-year-old Jaclyn Marquis McDonald was sent to the hospital. Gordon did not know the extent of her injuries.
McDonald lives at the same Lake Ridge address.
Both women were wearing their seat belts and speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash, he said.
McDonald works as a ceremonial photographer for the Air Force, according to her Facebook page.
