Crews representing nine Quantico Yacht Club boats competed in the 16th Annual Leukemia Cup Regatta, a race that benefits the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

The event took place last month in the Washington Sailing Marina. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is the world's largest voluntary health organization concerned solely with funding research toward cures for blood cancers. The 2009 Leukemia Cup raised more than $134,000 for the society.

This year, Larry Pozzi from "Air-Opportunity" and Marty Spitek of "Rhum Run-ner," joined forces with skipper Ray Boisvert on "Stacy Lynn" for the re-gatta.

Ray Williams ran "Te-Keel-La" with Drew Goralczyk from "Rediscovered Dreams" and Katherine Sowell from "Emma Caroline."

"Music Maker" had her helm turned by Charlie Hazard with a logistical hand lent by Ken Buetel of "Pixy Dust." Racing his first race in a rejuvenated Northrop-built Pear-son with a novice crew, Robert Lang worked "Good Trade."

To support the charity regatta, the skippers sold raffle tickets for a Caribbean vacation and gath-ered items for a silent auction. The four Quantico boats raised more than $3,952.

"The efforts of the Quantico Yacht Club members help to ensure that blood cancer patients and their families have the best resources possible available to them," said Loree Lipstein, the senior campaign manager for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, National Capital Area Chapter.

Although the down-turned economy pinched this year's fundraising, Lipstein remained confident to close any gap.

Although the race is over, supporters still can go to the Leukemia Cup Web site to make a dona-tion at http://nca.regatta.llsev ent.org/pledge/pledge_search.cfm?errflag1&mid0.

Supporters may also visit a boat specific site, such as that for Good Trade: http://nca.regatta.llsev ent.org/pledge/index.cfm?midGOODTRADE.

Lipstein asked all to remember that many small donations add up to a mighty sum.

After a day on the water, the competitors joined together for a Saturday evening celebration with music by The Cahoots, dinner from Guest Services, a silent auction, fun door prizes and a visit by the Washington Nationals mascot, Screech.

By Sunday, all the Quantico skippers returned to their home port knowing that they did their part in the race. Robert Lang and Good Trade placed third in the non-spinnaker class, taking home a plaque with commemorative inscription from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, National Capital Area Chapter.
