A Dale City woman charged in the death of her 9-month-old daughter told police she smelled something burning in the kitchen before she left the girl alone in the bathtub, court documents show.
Julia Sumo, 21, of the 12900 block of Kingswell Drive, was charged with felony child neglect after her daughter drowned on Oct. 10.
Sumo told police she was giving her daughter a bath when she smelled something burning on the stove, according to an affidavit for a search warrant filed in Prince William Circuit Court this week.
Sumo told police she left the baby alone in the bathtub to go to the kitchen, the affidavit states.
She said when she returned, she found the baby unresponsive.
She called Fire and Rescue services which took the baby, described to be in critical condition, to Potomac Hospital, according to the search warrant.
The baby later died at the hospital, police said.
According to the search warrant, investigators took clothing, photographs and a bathtub drain stopper from the house.
Sumo is being held without bond pending a hearing in Prince William Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.
Police said their investigation continues.
