14-year-old author visits school

No bones about it.

Jennie Dean Elementary students in Manassas recently enjoyed a visit from 14-year-old author Shea Megale and her companion dog, Mercer, thanks to the school's Parent Teacher Association.

Megale shared her experiences of being an author, and having a companion dog that helps her maintain her independence.

She has spinal muscular atrophy, a degenerative muscle disorder that weakens her muscles as she ages.

When Megale was in elementary school, she would write adventure stories in her journal about her dog. Her mother discovered the stories, which were reflective of some activities she may be missing out on, and that is how the "Marvelous Mercer" book series began.

Megale and her mother read from her first book, accompanied by screen shots of the illustrations. The children enjoyed the demonstrations given by Mercer.

Dean teachers have used this experience for writing assignments -- asking students to imagine and write about their own adventures. Fourth-grade teacher Monica Rogers asked her students to reflect on what their life might be like if they faced physical challenges like Megale.

In addition to writing books, Megale attends Westfields High School in Centreville, campaigns for SMA research groups and Canine Companion Dogs for Independence. Copies of her books and a replica "Mercer" stuffed animal were donated to the school library.
