For 25 years, dedicated Project Mend-A-House volunteers have accomplished home repairs and installed safety modifications for senior, disabled and low-income neighbors throughout Prince William County, Manassas and Manassas Park.

Last week's Taste of the Town Silver Jubilee celebration was every bit as memorable for its fun, its entertainment and its food as it was for its recognition of its origins and its highly cherished volunteers.

"I believe that Project Mend-A-House is an organization affording the people of the area the opportunity to bring kindness to their neighbors," said the Rev. Fred Parrish, chairman of the board of directors.

He added, "To all of you who have come to this 'Taste of Heaven' we are grateful for your kind support."

More than 35 local restaurants and businesses donated and served a buffet dinner to the more than 200 guests who participated in the celebration. Available food ranged from appetizers from Dak's Grill and Moe's Southwest Grill to entrees from Amici's, Panera Bread and Georgetown Caterers to desserts from Potomac Place.

The Youth Orchestra of Prince William String Quartet initially provided the evening's entertainment. After dinner, the five-person band "Rush Hour" rocked the Dale City VFW Hall with its mix of rock-and-roll dance hits.

Additionally, six students from the Forest Park High School Key Club volunteered their time by helping to set up and serve food.

"Every year we are so grateful for the generous contributions of our area's finest restaurants and best entertainment," said Andrea Saccoccia, executive director. "Our partnership with Forest Park epitomizes the spirit of volunteerism in today's youth."

However, the evening's main theme was the recognition of the significance of the volunteers' efforts and impact to the community for the past 25 years. Toni Clemons-Porter, a founding director, along with Linda Leiker and Ernie Kish, were recognized as the catalysts for establishing the organization as a valuable community partner.

In a show of the broad bipartisan support that the organizations enjoys today, all Prince William Board of County Supervisors were either represented or provided contributions to the event.
