Apple Credit Union's 10th student-run branch is set to open soon.
Not only will the new Battlefield High School branch offer students, faculty and staff the chance to take part in a unique financial education experience, but the program will also serve as a resource to help expand the horizons of special education students within the Haymarket school.
"Being able to have our own in-school branch of Apple Federal Credit Union is an exciting opportunity for Battlefield," said principal Amy Ethridge-Conti. "This provides our students with the chance to learn about savings and financial stewardship as part of our growing effort to teach financial literacy. We look forward to a strong working relationship with Apple."
Each of Apple's 35 student-run credit unions serves as an educational tool, providing students with real world financial literacy and the opportunity to explore future employment prospects, while developing an understanding of money, conceptually and in practice.
When possible, Apple works to partner with the school's special education students to insure that everyone has an opportunity to gain practical financial and life skills for their years beyond high school. Battlefield is no exception. Learning and physically disabled students interested in working with Apple will partner with the schools' accounting classes to help staff the location and serve credit union members.
"It is never too early to have students thinking about and practicing good saving methods," said Battlefield's Theodore Proctor. "Having Apple here at Battlefield will provide opportunity and fill that desirable, sought-after and necessary function for all."
