The 17-year-old who eluded police for nearly 20 hours was captured about 9 a.m. at a gas station at the intersection of Va. 234 and Hoadly Road, near Independent Hill.
When he was arrested the boy told police that he “just wanted to go home,” according a police source.
The teenager escaped from the Prince William County Juvenile Detention Center about 3 p.m. Tuesday, sparking a massive search which involved multiple K-9 units and a Fairfax County police helicopter.
The teenager, who is from the Manassas area, was previously arrested on assault related charges and was brought to the facility. He was not considered to be armed or dangerous, said Prince William police spokeswoman Erika Hernandez.
By the afternoon, police K-9 units fanned out across the search perimeter, much of which focused around detention center.
Initial reports indicated that the boy was later spotted by neighbors and police in the area of Alps and Conway drives. Police chased him through an area of power lines but were unable to catch him.
One unconfirmed report indicted that a police officer drew their weapon on the teen and told him to stop running. But the teenager continued running into the woods, continuing to police.
K-9 units also focused their attention in the area of Van Doren Road, near Dale City.
As the sun set just after 8 p.m., police continued their search at the Prince William County Sanitary Landfill, near the detention center. Police later decided to call off the larger search, though officers continued to look for him, said Hernandez.
