The Derek Wayne Crowe Memorial Golf Tournament will be Sept. 11 at the Heritage Hunt Golf and Country Club, Gainesville.
The tournament will benefit the Prince William County Schools Education Foundation and help fund an annual merit-based award to a graduating student/athlete who has demonstrated a commitment to academic achievement and a love sports, in addition to being actively involved in community service.
The $1,000 scholarship is offered in memory of Crowe’s selflessness for his time given to coaching youth and his passion for playing, coaching and umpiring the sports that he loved.
He played and coached in the Greater Manassas Baseball League for many years, taking teams to the 2003 state championship and fifth place in the Cal Ripken World Series. He then played with the original R.B. Thomas Engineering softball team.
He also became involved with refereeing and umpiring with the Virginia High School League and the Northern Virginia Football Officials Association. His greatest thrill was referring scrimmages for the Washington Redskins as he was an avid and loyal fan. The Boston Red Sox was his beloved baseball team.
Crowe, 46, died on Jan. 19, 2008 in Gainesville.
The tournament format will be captain’s choice with awards for both flight groupings. Following the tournament, there will be an awards dinner. There will be several contests that will include two long-drive holes, two closet-to-the-pin holes, and two $5,000 hole-in opportunities. Two lucky golfers will also have he chance to win a contest by sinking a $500 chip or a $500 putt. Tee time is 1:30 p.m. with a 12:30 p.m. check in.
Past scholarship recipients were John Miller, a graduate of Stonewall Jackson High School, and Devon Snow, a 2008 graduate of Osbourn High School.
