Montclair-area schools will be open for the new school year Tuesday. For many of our students, their mode of transportation to school is walking. There are three clearly marked “school zones” near Henderson, Montclair and Pattie elementaries. When the yellow lights in the school zones on Waterway and Tallowwood are blinking, the speed limit is 25 mph. Please also remember, drivers must stop for pedestrians in a marked crosswalk.

Azalea golf outing

Over the past few years Azalea Charities has hosted the Oktoberfest Outing as a way to bring together sponsors, friends and supporters of Azalea Charities for a nice round of golf, dinner and camaraderie. In addition to being a great time, it also serves as a fundraiser to offset operating costs of the organization and bring some financial support to one of their partners, Greater Washington Sports Charities Inc.

This year’s Oktoberfest Outing will be held Sept. 22 at the Piedmont Club located in Haymarket. The format will be a two-man scramble. Registration will be from 11 to 11:50 a.m., with a 12:15 p.m. sharp tee time and dinner to follow. The cost to participate is $125 per player.

For more information, please contact Frank Lasch at 703-670-5238, or AzaleaCharities.org.

Oktoberfest volunteers needed

MPOA Oktoberfest 2009 will be Oct. 19, 2 to 9 p.m. at Dolphin Beach. The Community Events Committee needs many volunteers to make this a successful event.

There are many shifts still available in all areas. Volunteering provides a great opportunity for those new to Montclair to meet their neighbors, those who have been here a while to spend time with their friends, and Montclair students to earn service hours. All volunteers receive an Oktoberfest T-shirt and tickets redeemable for food, drink, games and rides. Volunteers are needed to work two-hour shifts.

To volunteer, sign up online at www.montclairva.com.
