Marumsco Hills Elementary fifth-grade students took a field trip to Washington this June to meet and be photographed with Rep. Gerald E. Connolly, D-11th, who serves Prince William County.
The students also toured the Capitol Visitor's Center and the U.S. Capitol. For many of the students, it was their first time visiting the nation's Capitol and to see the operations of the federal government first-hand.
Connolly took a short break from a committee meeting to explain to the students what he does in Washington to look after the interest of the people who live in the district he represents.
As the tour progressed, several students recognized Statuary Hall as the place that President Obama held his historic post-inaugural lunch. The students saw many statues throughout the building and searched for the two that repre-sented Virginia.
As the students located George Washington in the rotunda and Robert E. Lee in the crypt, they looked up in awe at the concave painting on the inside of the great dome of the rotunda.
The students were exposed to sculptures, paintings and architecture of historical, political and artistic importance.
"There was so much to see that many of the students, as well as the parent chaperones, vowed upon departing that they would be coming back to more thoroughly explore this local national treasure," said Michelle Stur-gill, a fifth-grade teacher at Marumsco Hills Elementary School.
Sturgill exclaimed that it was an exceptional opportunity that will be a highlight of every student's educa-tional experience for years.
