There’s a new gathering place at American Legion Post 364 in Woodbridge.
The sounds of construction filled the air Aug. 29 as dozens of volunteers put the finishing touches on an outdoor deck at the Post Home on Friendly Lane.
“This is a joint effort with all our members,” said Legionnaire Brownie Conley, who also volunteered as the project’s foreman. “We wanted to add a little something for our members.“
The uncovered 23 x 35 deck was built with pressure treated wood and will have secure guardrails around its perimeters for safety.
“It’s going to be great for our membership,” he added.
Home Depot gave the Legion a break on the cost of the construction materials, said Post Commander Dan Eubanks.
“We’re very appreciative,” he said. “We look at it as an extension of our social quarters.“
With no steps and only one entrance from the main structure, the deck, on the right hand side of the Post Home, is also handicap accessible, said Conley.
Conley is employed as a project manager for Pulte Homes, formerly Centrex, and has many years of professional residential construction experience. He lauded the efforts of the volunteers, many of who have little or no construction experience.
“You just point the way and they’ll do it,” Conley said. “That’s all I do. I just point the way.“
Conley noted that the deck’s design plans and construction have been inspected and approved all along the way by the Prince William County Planning Office.
