Dear Lane Ranger,
I was driving along the Prince William Parkway last week, in the direction of Woodbridge, and noticed that there was black pavement along the right side of the road. It looks like someone added a wider right shoulder to the road, from the intersection of Yates Ford Road to at least the bridge that crosses the Occoquan River. Did the road really need a shoulder where there was already one in place?

The road did not get a wider surface, just a new coat of asphalt sealant.
The additive is applied to the road surface as a preventative measure to prolong the life of the pavement surface, said Virginia Department of Transportation spokeswoman Jennifer McCord.
It was applied between Yates Ford Road and Scenic Point Place.
This work was an asphalt sealant, which was applied between Yates Ford Drive and Scenic Point. The shoulder is not any wider, but the sealant is a preventative measure to prolong the life of the pavement and surface.
