Thirty-five thousand two hundred and five United States military casualties have been recorded during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom as of Aug. 31.
While programs are available to help those wounded while serving their country, some service members do not always know where to find it. This is where the Wounded Warrior Call Center in Dumfries steps in.
The WWCC has made more than 13,000 calls to injured Marines to make sure they are getting the help they deserve. This outreach mission has earned them a Department of Defense Best Practices award.
“It is the outreach mission that separates the Marine Corps’ WWCC from other call centers,” said Lt. Col. Sean P. Mattingly, who recommended the WWCC for the award. “Instead of being in a solely reactive mode and serving those service members who call in, the WWCC aggressively reaches out to them.“
Commandant of the Marine Corps Gen. James T. Conway was on hand to congratulate the members of the WWCC for their commitment to caring for wounded Marines.
“Never before has our nation endeavored to take care of our wounded like we do today with the wounded warriors,” said Conway during the award ceremony. “We’re not done yet,” added Conway, referring to the Marines currently participating in the overseas contingency operations in Afghanistan.
The Marine Corps provides the WWCC with information on all Marines wounded since Sept. 11, 2001, to assist the WWCC in their mission. The WWCC was recognized by the DoD for the complex system used to contact Marines that have separated from the Marine Corps.
The Marine Corps Wounded Ill and Injured Tracking System pulls data from personnel and administration systems to give the WWCC a starting point in their search. All incoming and outgoing phone calls are recorded to allow for on-the-spot quality assurance by Marine Corps and WWCC personnel. WWCC also uses LexisNexis, a searchable archive
