A man shot and fatally wounded himself Sunday morning in front of his Dale City home.
It happened before noon Sunday in the 13300 block of Packard Drive. Residents said Joseph Kerr walked across the street, told a neighbor to tell his wife and daughter he loved them and then started walking back home.
He then shot himself in the street in front of his home. He died a short time later, police said.
His wife, Paula, is visiting her sister in Connecticut and said the suicide was “a complete shock.”
The incident is the latest in a string of suicides in Prince William County in recent weeks.
On Aug. 24, a Dale City man barricaded himself in his apartment for more than eight hours before shooting and killing himself.
Prince William County police found 34-year-old Lindale Thomas dead after evacuating neighbors at Dale Forest Apartments to nearby Godwin Middle School for most of the day.
And on Aug. 19, a Dumfries couple died in a murder-suicide, one week after a News & Messenger reporter interviewed them about their impending foreclosure.
Julie Fay, 57, and her husband Wallis Fay, were found dead in their townhouse on the eve of their move to Colorado. Neighbors hadn’t heard from the couple for a few days and called police.
The Fays told the News & Messenger that they hadn’t been notified that their home was sold. They had planned to move to Colorado for a transfer in Wallis Fay’s job. But the week of their move, they found out the transfer wasn’t approved.
