Dear Lane Ranger,
The new traffic light at Minnieville Road and General Washington Drive does not appear to have a sensor to trigger the light to change. The time varies in length. What gives?

I was told by Khattab O. Shammout of the Prince William County Transportation Department, that the signal is equipped with something called a magnetic loop detector trigger that is embedded in the pavement.
When a car stops behind the marked “stop bar” at the light, the detector is supposed to trigger the light, said Shammout. But just to be sure, he told me that he would check on the detector to make sure it is working and then get back to me about it.
Let me know if the problem persists.
