FAIRFAX -- Virginia transportation are planning to kick-start a study on improvements to Interstate 66.
Virginia Transportation Secretary Pierce Homer says officials will examine potential solutions for the portion of the highway outside the Capital Beltway. Options include transit and toll lanes.
The long-term study, including an environmental impact statement, will be completed in 2011.
The study has been planned for years but was shelved in 2002 after a sales tax that would have paid for northern Virginia transportation projects was rejected in a referendum. Since then, the region has turned to public-private partnerships to fund transportation improvements.
