WASHINGTON (AP) — Virginia Railway Express is considering eliminating its youth discount program to prevent adults from using cheap train tickets meant for kids.
VRE, which operates trains from Manassas and Fredericksburg into the District, gives anyone 21 and under a 50 percent discount on regular price tickets, which can cost up to $10.30 for a single ride.
VRE spokesman Mark Roeber says the agency noticed it was selling more youth tickets but didn't see more students riding the train.
VRE estimates that the crackdown could bring in as much as $300,000.
A public hearing and vote will have to be held before any changes are made; no date has been set.
