Dear Lane Ranger,
I would like to know if the drainage problem at the intersection of Old Bridge and Oakwood Drive, near a newly constructed OmniRide bus stop, will be addressed before there is a serious accident.
The least little bit of rain stays on the roadway and does not drain away after the rain stops. I have seen the water almost cover the entire right lane on both Old Bridge and Oakwood Drives.
This will be a dangerous site when the weather turns to freezing. Any handicapped person trying to access the bus stop after a storm will be wheeling through water or on ice! Why wasn't proper drainage considered in the design before construction?
Sincerely,
Linda Witherel
Lake Ridge
Dear Linda,
We took your question to the Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission, the agency that operates OmniRide, and they said a contractor began fixing the problem last week.
The contractor installed a new drain inlet along the curb at the bus stop and changed the grade along the gutter strip next to the handicapped ramp, so water will no longer accumulate there, said PRTC spokeswoman Christine Rodrigo.
The transit agency became aware of the problem in July, and said it is caused by "unique road grades" at the intersection of Oakwood Drive and Old Bridge Road. As a result of the land slopes at the intersection, the lowest point of the intersection is the sidewalk's handicapped ramp, explained Rodrigo.
The new bus stop will be served by OmniRide buses returning from Capitol Hill, some Lake Ridge and Dale City OmniRide buses, as well as Woodbridge OmniLink local buses. The stop will open as soon as the drainage problem is fixed, said Rodrigo.
