The Boy Scouts of America National Court of Honor has awarded Piran Alexander Talkington the Medal of Merit for his quick action applying the Heimlich Maneuver and restoring breathing to his young sister.
On July 24, 2007 about 6:00 oclock in the evening, Mrs. Brigit Talkington, her 10 year-old son Piran and four year old daughter Caitlyn were enjoying pizza at the dining room table in their home. Mrs. Talkington left the table to answer the telephone. During her brief absence, young Caitlyn started choking on the pizza. Without hesitation, Piran moved behind his sisters chair, and performed the Heimlich maneuver. Caitlyn coughed up a large piece of pizza onto her plate, just before her mother returned to the dining room. After calming down, the young girl thanked her brother with a hug.
Pirans quick action applying a skill he had learned in Cub Scouting demonstrate his preparedness and concern for the well-being of his sister. He exemplifies the finest traditions of Scouting.
The son of Brigit and Adam Talkington, Piran is currently a member of Troop 1367 chartered out of American Legion Post #364, Woodbridge, Virginia.
