MS golf fundraiser scheduled for Friday

The annual golf fundraiser for multiple myeloma research will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at Virginia Oaks Golf Club, 7950 Virginia Oaks Drive, Gainesville.

The event is sponsored by Tournament Golf Association of America (TGAA) and benefits the Ercole Comini Charity. One-hundred percent of all funds raised will support cancer research at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore and the Life with Cancer Center in Fairfax.

Cost is $150 per player which includes greens fee, cart, beverages, lunch and dinner, silent auction and skill games, hole-in-prizes on every par 3 (including a $10,000 hole-in-one, $5,000 putting contest) and more.

Game format is four-person scramble.

Participants may register as a team or sign up as individuals, a twosome or a threesome. TGAA will fill in players where needed.

Multiple myeloma is a rare cancer affecting white blood cells and the immune system. and is thought to be largely incurable. TGAA owner Dennis Barca’s grandfather, Ercole Comini, was a victim of the disease.

Attention non-profits

Non-profits are encouraged to apply for the Giving Circle of Heritage Hunt’s third annual round of grants to be awarded for specific projects helping needy residents in western Prince William County.

An applying organization must have a budget of less than $2 million, clear goals and objectives and measurable outcomes.

All applicants will be required to prove 501(c)(3) status.

Circle members will choose recipients after the Sept. 1 application deadline and grantees will be recognized at a reception in early November.

Grant requests may not exceed $1,000. The Giving Circle of Heritage Hunt will not consider organizations that promote a particular religious or political ideology; endowment or capital projects and campaigns; special fundraising events; general operation expenses or intermediary funding agencies.

Register now for 2010 pesticide disposal

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) and the Virginia Pesticide Control Board invite farmers, pesticide dealers, pest control firms, homeowners and golf courses to participate in the 2010 pesticide disposal program designed to collect unwanted, outdated or banned pesticides and safely dispose of them.

VDACS, through its Office of Pesticide Services, provides this service at no cost to participants.

This year, for Prince William County, the disposal program takes place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Evergreen Volunteer Fire Department, 3510 James Madison Highway, Haymarket on Sept. 14.
Participants must transport unwanted pesticides to central collection sites. If participants cannot safely contain the unwanted pesticides for transport, the disposal contractor will make arrangements.

Only unwanted pesticides will be accepted. Pesticide contaminated material (for example, pesticide contaminated fertilizer) will not be accepted. The program does not accept motor oil, paint, fuel, fertilizer or other chemicals.

Participants should complete a pesticide disposal registration form as soon as possible and return the completed form to VDACS, PO Box 1163, Richmond Va, 23218. The form is available online at www.vdacs.virginia.gov/pesticides/disposal.shtml or by calling 804-786-3798.
