DALE CITY, Va. -- A Dale City woman has been charged with 77 counts of animal cruelty after police said they found her townhouse at 3522 Buffalo Court filled with cats and dogs.
During the investigation into the animal cruelty-hoarding case, police obtained and executed a search warrant Wednesday at the home of Janet Lynne Hollins, 51, and found 27 dogs and 50 cats, said Prince William police spokesman Jonathan Perok.
Police and members of the Prince William Animal Control Bureau seized the animals. They were all taken to the Prince William County Animal Shelter, said 1st Sgt. Dawn Harman, director of the county’s animal control bureau.
“This more than doubled the number of animals we have overnight,” Harman said. “We had to section off half of our dog run to accommodate all the dogs and the majority of our isolation area is for the cats. We’re packed to capacity.”
Harman said the animals were in good condition.
“There’s nothing that would require immediate euthanasia or anything like that,” she said.
While the animals don’t seem to require any special medical attention, they will remain in the shelter as evidence until after Hollins appears in court on Sept. 22, Harman said.
If Hollins is found guilty the judge will likely release the animals to the shelter, Harman said.
“We’ll try to adopt out as many as we can,” Harman said.
