Prince William County, Va. - As a result of a new federal stimulus package, Prince William County Public Schools expects to be able to hire approximately 180 additional classroom teachers this fall.
According to school officials, this will allow the division to address such important needs as lowering class size, meeting academic targets and supporting economically disadvantaged schools.
Congress recently passed a bill providing an additional $10 billion of federal stimulus funds for education jobs nationwide. Approximately $249.5 million will go to Virginia, according to a letter from the Virginia Department of Education.
Although the stimulus money is for only one year, county school officials believe the division will be able to absorb these positions next year due to continued student population growth.
In order to modify its fiscal 2011 budget, the Prince William County School Board will have to receive approval from the Prince William Board of County Supervisors.
