Godwin MS to receive grant money

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Prince William County Public Schools has been awarded a $200,000 grant by the Virginia Department of Education through the 21st Century Community Learning Centers program for an after-school and summer program at Godwin Middle School.

Funds will be used to address academic, health, attendance, and enrichment needs of Godwin students and provide some community services for parents and guardians. The 21st Century Community Learning Centers program was created for academic enrichment during non-school hours for children, particularly students who attend high-poverty and low-performing schools.

The Prince William County Park Authority, a co-applicant for the grant, will contribute resources including incentives, facilities, and curriculum to address physical fitness in a family setting.

The grant is renewable for an additional two years at $200,000 each year, for a total of $600,000, depending upon the school meeting the benchmarks of the grant. Community services for parents such as financial education and GED classes, health workshops, and parenting classes will be provided through partnering agencies and organizations.

Other partners include Belvoir Credit Union, Virginia STAR Program, Bethel AME Church and Old Dominion Chapter of The Links Incorporated.

The Belvoir Credit Union will conduct financial education classes for participating Godwin families at least once each semester on personal finance, including how to build savings, home buying, building good credit, and coping with loss or reduction of income.

The Virginia STAR Program will introduce students to the field of Information Technology repair by scaling up the model program developed at Forest Park High School.

Bethel AME Church will provide school supplies and tutors in the after-school program and adult volunteers to assist family members seeking a GED certificate.

The Links Incorporated will conduct two health workshops to include dental and oral health clinics for students in the after-school and summer programs.
