PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. - A Gainesville man was sentenced Friday to serve three years and 10 months in federal prison for possessing child pornography.
Samuel I. Kaplan, 65, was also sentenced to serve 15 years of probation.
Kaplan, who was working for the FBI at the time of his arrest, pleaded guilty in June to possession of child pornography.
According to court documents, Kaplan worked as an information technology program manager at an FBI building in Chantilly.
Investigators discovered that Kaplan was using the FBI’s computer networks to “facilitate sexually explicit communications,” according to the court documents.
Investigators with the Justice Department’s Office of Inspector General searched Kaplan’s Gainesville home and found between 10 and 20 images of child pornography on his home computer, court records show.
The case was prosecuted as part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Childhood, which was launched nationwide in May 2006 to fight child sexual exploitation.
