WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Polish authorities say they have arrested a U.S. citizen wanted for allegedly sexually abusing five boys in Virginia.
Interpol says 39-year-old John Edward Hamilton fled to Europe in late 2009 before he could stand trial in the United States.
Polish border guard spokesman Cezary Zaborski said Thursday the suspect had been apprehended Wednesday afternoon on a bus as he was heading from Poland to Denmark.
He was handed over to police pending a court decision whether to extradite him to the U.S.
Interpol says Hamilton is a former baseball and basketball coach accused of sexually abusing the boys, ages 10 to 16, between 1992 and 2008. Interpol says Hamilton had been due to plead guilty to a series of offenses before he fled.
Police in Fairfax County, Va., say Hamilton lived in Centreville, a suburb of Washington.
