Three members of a Stafford County family died in a Friday morning crash that clogged traffic on southbound Interstate 95 and secondary roads for hours.
The crash happened at 6:17 a.m. near the 141 mile marker just south of Garrisonville, when a 2007 Dodge Caravan struck a 2010 Chevrolet Impala, state police said.
The impact pushed the Impala off the right side of the road and into a guardrail. The Caravan veered off the left side of the road and flipped into an embankment, its roof striking a tree as it landed upside down.
Stafford County officials said the family in the van was trapped, and by the time rescue workers stabilized the vehicle they had already succumbed to their injuries.
Police identified the victims as 73-year-old driver Melvin Miller, his wife Marilyn Miller, 70, and their daughter Tina Miller, 47. All lived in the 200 block of Oak Grove Lane in North Stafford. All three wore their seat belts.
The three were on their way to visit family in West Virginia, state police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said.
The driver of the Chevrolet, 29-year-old Moesha Coleman of Hoschton, Ga., was not injured. She, too, wore her seat belt, Geller said.
The southbound lanes of I-95 were closed for four hours after the wreck, creating miles of backups on both the interstate, parallel U.S.1 and feeder roads, police said.
Police are still trying to determine the cause of the crash, and no one had been charged Friday.
