Two large dogs were chasing geese when they wound up stranded in an icy pond in Woodbridge this morning, fire department officials said.
The fire department was called to Howison Homestead Park, on Minnieville Road in Woodbridge, at about 9:55 a.m. to rescue the dogs, Prince William fire and rescue Battalion Chief Joe Robertson said.
"The two dogs went into the water chasing geese and got stranded," Robertson said.
The dogs, who were at the park with their owner, were about 20 feet from the shoreline when they got stuck in the icy water, he said.
Firefighters used an inflatable raft to reach the dogs and bring them back to the shore one at a time.
Both dogs were rescued within about 45 minutes, Robertson said.
The dogs were turned over to animal control officers for a medical exam, he said.
