Good luck to Mr. Hjelm trying to get information out of the Prince William County School System.
According to a story in the News & Messenger on Jan. 22, Mr. Hjelm is trying to get the school system to tell him who visited three high schools starting with the first week of December 2007.
This information is available through an automated system the schools use to determine a prospective visitor's sex offender status.
The school system has refused to provide the information. Mr. Hjelm has attempted to get it through Freedom of Information Act requests and the courts.
In addition to finding the school system's position disturbing, as a taxpayer I am outraged that they don't know how much they have spent in legal fees over the issue.
According to the article, the law firm employed by the school system doesn't keep the costs "separate from the myriad other daily legal services provided to the [school] Division."
The schools complain about not having enough money. Maybe they need to stop spending so much on lawyers, or at least know how much they are spending on lawyers.
