I just thought I would write to the News & Messenger as a little public service announcement about paying your personal property tax on your vehicle.
Being in the military and also traveling, I found this year I forgot to pay it. However Prince William County saw fit to remind me, by deducting twice the amount from my small tax return (which is now much smaller). Interestingly enough, both my wife and myself received tax offset bills from Prince William County on the same vehicle!
The same VIN was listed on both letters, both letters came to the same address and twice the amount was deducted from our tax return.
While I freely admit I should not have overlooked this very important item, I don't believe that this should have happened in the first place. While I have filed an appeal via mail, Prince William County tax officials continue to not answer my phone calls to their hotline.
It almost seems like Prince William did this on purpose -- both letters were issued the same day, to people with the same last name at the same address.
I would implore that nobody forget their personal property tax bill this year, and I would implore the Prince William County Department of Taxation to own up to its mistake and answer the phone!
