Prince William's poverty rate was half the state's level in 2008, and a third of the nation's, according to the most recent statistics available from the U.S. Census Bureau.

"The 2008 American Community Survey reported that [the county's] poverty rate was 5.2 percent in 2008, less than half the statewide rate of 10.2 percent and about one third the national rate of 13.2 percent," according to the county's fourth quarter demographic report.

In fact, in terms of job growth, Prince William has surpassed nearly every other jurisdiction.

"Prince William County has outpaced regional, state and national economies in businesses, and job growth over the last five years," states the report.

The solid job prospects have helped push the county's median household income level to the number 16 spot nationwide, according to the statistics.

In 2008, Prince William's median household income was $88,724, the 16 highest among the largest counties in the U.S., and the fourth highest in Virginia. Per capita in Prince William that same year was $36,049, according to the county demographic report.

Topping the list of 20 wealthiest counties by median household income in 2008 was Loudoun at nearly $115,000, and Fairfax at about $105,000. Those were followed by two counties in New Jersey and Maryland, and then again by another in Virginia. Arlington County placed fifth with around $101,000, according to Census figures.

Bottoming out the list at number 20 was yet another Virginia county -- Arlington. In 2008, the median household income there was about $88,000, according to bureau statistics.
