Quantico officials are continuing their investigation into the apparent suicide of a Marine captain at the base correctional facility who was awaiting trial on charges that he defrauded the federal government.
Capt. Michael A. Webb, 46, of Coto de Caza, Calif., was found unresponsive Sunday at 7:21 a.m. and was later pronounced dead at the scene, said Lt. Col. Roger Galbriath.
The exact time of Webb's death is unknown and under investigation. Galbriath declined to say how Webb died.
"Capt. Webb was alleged to have defrauded the government of pay, allowances and entitlements," Galbraith said.
Webb had been in the brig since August 2009. He was awaiting trial by court martial that had been scheduled for Feb. 17 on a variety of violations of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, "mostly related to fraud, fraud against the government, larceny and conduct unbecoming of an officer and gentleman," Galbraith said.
Webb had been placed under pretrial restraint as a result of the serious nature of his misconduct, because he failed to report to Quantico Marine Corps base when ordered, and because he was determined by an independent reviewing officer to be a flight risk, Galbraith said.
Webb had enlisted previously in both the Army and Navy and joined the Corps on July 1, 2005. He was promoted to captain on May 1, 2007. Webb's awards include the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
At the time of his death, Webb was assigned to Casual Platoon, Service Company, Headquarters and Service Battalion, Marine Corps Base Quantico.
Webb was unmarried and is survived by his mother and father.
