State police are investigating an early morning shooting that left one person seriously injured on Interstate 95 in Stafford County.
Just before 2 a.m. Thursday three men were traveling in a blue van on I-95 south in Stafford just before Exit 136, a Virginia State Police spokesman said.
Two other vehicles were nearby when "multiple gunshots were fired at the van," police said.
One person in the van was seriously injured, police said.
Police want to interview the occupants of the other two vehicles, which police believe left I-95 at Exit 136 and drove onto Va. 627.
One of the vehicles is described as a dark-colored SUV, possibly a Honda CRV or a Jeep. The other vehicle is described only as a small automobile, police said.
The van continued on I-95 after the shooting until Exit 130, when it merged onto Va. 3, crossed over four lanes of traffic and made an illegal U-turn, police said.
A Fredericksburg police officer stopped the van for traffic violations and discovered that a passenger in the van had been shot.
The shooting victim was then taken to Mary Washington Hospital.
"At this stage of the investigation, we have no reason to believe that this was a random shooting and may be the result of a previous altercation," Virginia State Police Capt. Rick Jenkins said in a statement.
Anyone with information about the accident is asked to call the Virginia State Police at 1-888-300-0156 or to e-mail bci.culpeper@vsp.virginia.gov.
