DALE CITY, Va. -- The Prince William Ice Center on Dale Boulevard began sagging under the weight of heavy snow Saturday, with skaters inside.
The building at 5180 Dale Blvd. is a total loss, owner Bill Hutzler said. Skaters practicing inside had been evacuated before the collapse and no one was injured.
"We had some speed skaters on the ice this morning, then a beam on ceiling started to twist and ... we got everybody out," said Hutzler, who bought the rink in March 2008. The rink was built in 1996.
A hazardous materials team was called to the scene due to high amounts of ammonia in the building, which is used to keep the ice fresh.
Hutzler said his business is popular with skaters and ice hockey players and he wants them to know he'll reopen as soon as he can.
"Be patient," he said. "We'll be back soon."
At Manassas Regional Airport, a hangar collapsed under the weight of snow on Saturday afternoon.
The structure at 10520 Wakeman Drive was a 24,000-square-foot aircraft hangar owned by Dulles Aviation, Inc. There were no people and no planes in the building and no one was injured.
The collapse did break a gas line, causing a significant gas leak, fire officials said.
Another hangar collapsed at Dulles International Airport on Saturday morning. No one was inside and no injuries were reported.
In Washington, there were reports of a church roof caving in and a townhouse roof collapsing Saturday afternoon. There was no word on injuries at press time.
