Woodbridge, Va. - The merchants of Smoketown Plaza and Festival at Old Bridge recently donated money to two Lake Ridge schools.
The merchants of Smoketown Plaza donated $1,000 to Woodbridge Senior High School as part of the shopping center's annual holiday shopping spree drawing promotion. The merchants of Festival at Old Bridge donated $1,000 to Springwoods Elementary School as part of the promotion.
Woodbridge received the money courtesy of Juan Velasquez, who listed it as his favorite school on an entry form he filled out at Smoketown Plaza. Velasquez is a freshman at Woodbridge Senior High School.
In addition to a $1,000 donation to the school, Velasquez received $500 worth of gift certificates to Smoke-town Plaza for himself.
"We are in great need of a girls' softball press box. We have been trying to raise funds for it and this donation comes at a great time," said David Huckestein, Woodbridge's princi-pal.
Since the introduction of the holiday shopping spree promotion in 2007, Smoketown Plaza has donated $3,000 to neighboring Prince William County Schools, including ,Gar-field High School and Minnieville Elementary School.
Smoketown Plaza is located on Smoketown Road, between Prince William Parkway and Minnieville Road. The shopping center includes Lowe's Home Improvement, Aldi, Glory Days Grill and Dun-kin' Donuts.
Springwoods received the donation thanks to Joe Carr. He listed Springwoods Elementary School as his favorite school on the entry form. Carr's two daughters are students at Springwoods Elementary School.
In addition to a $1,000 donation, Carr won a $500 shopping spree to Festival at Old Bridge Shopping Cen-ter for himself.
"We are very happy about the donation, but not sure yet as to which project the funds will go," said Virginia Ripperger, principal of Springwoods Elementary.
This is the ninth year Festival at Old Bridge Shopping Center has donated funds to a local school.
