The Virginia General Assembly convenes its 60-day legislative session today that will be dominated by the effort to close a projected $4.2 billion hole in the budget for 2010-12.
The Virginia House of Delegates welcomes more than 20 new faces, two of them in the Richmond area’s delegation.
The new delegates include Democrat Betsy B. Carr, who represents parts of Richmond and Chesterfield County; and Republican John Cox, who represents part of Hanover County.
Carr, a former member of the Richmond School Board, succeeds Democrat Frank Hall, who retired to accept a seat on the state Alcoholic Beverage Control Board. Cox, who owns a trucking company, succeeds Frank Hargrove, who retired after serving 28 years in the House of Delegates.
At 7 p.m. Gov. Timothy M. Kaine delivers his final State of the Commonwealth Address. On Saturday Bob McDonnell takes office as Virginia’s 71st governor.
This morning Kaine and McDonnell both attended the annual Commonwealth Prayer Breakfast at the Greater Richmond Convention Center.
