Supervisors to announce new Prince William County executive

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Prince William supervisors have finally selected a new county executive and will announce the details at a press conference Tuesday at 3 p.m. in the McCoart Adminstration Building.

Craig Gerhart left the position months ago for a contract job with Amtrak. Assistant county executive Susan Roltsch has since filled the shoes. Following an extensive and nationwide search, and interview of a select few at Old Hickory Golf Course a few weeks ago, supervisors have found a permanent replacement.

The 3 p.m. announcement interrupts the supervisors’ regular board meeting, which includes discussion of the county’s 2010 legislative priorities and two Fire and Rescue Dept. issues – the quarterly report from the Fire and Rescue Association and whether to move to the next stage of a policy that would charge users for medical emergency transport.

Supervisors will also receive updates on the county’s Green Community Initiative, a program that seeks to implement environmentally friendly measures in government buildings. For instance, the Green Initiative focuses on six areas: conservation, managing waste, protecting lands, green building, education and outreach, and government practices and policies that bring the goals to fruition.

So far, the county has received a $3.2 million grant “for energy improvement projects at the court house, western district police station and McCoart” government building, according to background documents to the board. Now staff is asking the board “for direction to explore and then bring forward recommendations for a green fleet policy, carbon footprints reduction goals, energy conservation policies and incentives for the community to undertake green efforts,” the background documents state.

Supervisors will also receive quarterly updates from state and county transportation officials about the status of road projects. At the evening session that starts at 7:30, the board will consider comments from the public on two long-term policy updates involving separate chapters of the Comprehensive Plan – the one of land-use and the one on transportation and mass transit.

The evening meeting will also be held at the McCoart Administration Building.
