MANASSAS, Va. -- Police have made an arrest in the Wednesday heist at a BB&T in Manassas, but say he is not connected to a string of city bank robberies that have occurred in recent months.
Majeed Abdul Spanta, 39, was arrested at his home in the 5400 block of Middlebourne Way in Centreville on Friday, and was charged with the robbery of the BB&T Bank at 8780 Centreville Road, about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, said Manassas police spokesman Sgt. Tim Neumann.
Police say the robber walked into the bank, approached a teller and demanded money. The teller complied and the man fled the bank through the rear doors with an undisclosed amount of cash, said Neumann.
A weapon was never displayed during the robbery, he added.
In addition to the BB&T robbery, one of the many that has occurred in the city recently was a robbery at a Wachovia Bank in Old Town Manassas, at the corner of Church Street and Grant Avenue.
On Jan. 11, a man wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans walked into the bank about 3:30 p.m. and demanded money, got it and then fled on foot. Witnesses did not see which direction the man fled.
Police said the man matched the same description of a robber that held up other city banks, Northwest Federal Credit Union at 9730 Liberia Avenue on Dec. 29., United Bank on Liberia Avenue on Nov. 30 and Synergy One Federal Credit Union off Sudley Manor Drive on Nov. 12.
