On the recent anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade decision, a lot of people's thoughts were on the abortion issue. Abortion truly is a terrible thing, and it is important to speak out against its practice.
All kinds of activities can be used to discourage the use of abortion. Protests can be held, information can be distributed, and most of all we can pray for its end. Persuasion is the most powerful tool available for this purpose. Persuasion is much more powerful than the use of force. Force is never an effective way to convince people to change.
Jesus, Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. all observed that non-violence is the path to lasting change. It should be noted that laws are a form of force. Either obey the law or be punished; that is force. There are many people out there who do not believe that life begins at conception.
That is an error, but it is an error people are allowed to make. There is no absolute, convincing evidence to prove these errors wrong. In a democracy, the rights of an individual to act can only be taken away with conclusive evidence; laws cannot be based on theology.
The abortion issue is an issue of conscience, and the conscience cannot be forced. I, therefore, do not support laws that would outlaw abortion. It is more important to use the power of persuasion to change how people behave than to force people to change. Obviously, there are a lot of people out there who do want to change our laws to outlaw abortion. I just want to urge you to consider whether it is proper to use the force of law to enforce your personal convictions.
