Perdue Farms in Georgia has voluntarily recalled almost 92,000 pounds of frozen chicken nuggets out of concern they may contain plastic.
The chicken product, Great Value Fully Cooked Chicken Nuggets, is sold at Walmart stores nationwide.
“The company discovered small pieces of blue plastic after receiving consumer complaints,” the U.S. Agriculture Department’s Food Safety and Inspection Service reported, in a written release. “[Food Safety] has not received any reports of injury at this time. Anyone concerned about an injury from consumption of this product should contact a physician.”
The recall only affects a single product: the 1-pound, 13-ounce bag of Great Value Fully Cooked Chicken Nuggets that bears the establishment number P-33944 and case code, 89008A0160. The recalled product also has the “Best if Used By” date of June 9, 2011, the Food Safety and Inspection Service reports.
“No other Great Value branded chicken products or Perdue products are involved in the recall,” Perdue reports, on its company website.
Consumers may return the chicken to the retailer for a full refund.
A Perdue spokesman said the “likely source was a small plastic ring that got into the raw material before the nuggets were formed.”
