Prince William County, Va. -The first full weekend in August, the 6 through 8, marks the start of tax free savings on dozens of back-to-school items.
"During this three-day period" that runs Friday through Sunday, "purchases of qualify-ing school supplies selling for $20 or less per item, and purchases of qualifying clothing and footwear selling for $100 or less per item will be exempt from sales tax," according to an announcement from the Virginia Department of Taxation.
Officially, the sales tax reprieve begins at 12:01 a.m. on Friday and ends at midnight, Sunday.
Ineligible are computers and computer supplies, as well as clothing accessories, sports equipment or ath-letic footwear. Diapers, however, are included, and other somewhat surprising items dot the back-to-school list. For instance: Tax-free, too, are aprons, baby bibs, bathing suits, corsets, costumes, coveralls, ear muffs, garters and girdles, gloves, hats, hosiery, shoe inserts, legwarmers, nightgowns and pajamas, uniforms -- both athletic and non-athletic -- vests, and wedding veils and wear.
As for the school supply list, items are mostly predictable and include everything from binders, book bags, clay and compasses to dictionaries, lunch boxes, paints, paper and pencil boxes. Sheet music, also, is tax free.
The state sales tax on these products in Virginia is 5 percent.
