No jobs lost in Prince William schools

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. -- Now everyone can breathe easier.

Slated originally to trim more than 700 jobs due to projected state and local revenue shortfalls, Prince William County Public Schools recently announced that no one will lose their jobs going into the 2010-11 school year.

By the end of May, the number had been paired down to 68 jobs being lost – none of them teachers. However, late last week, Superintendent Steven L. Walts announced there would be no layoffs.

According to a press release issued on June 4, this was accomplished by unexpected additional revenue from the state and the county, hiring freezes already in place, the need for employees at increasingly overcrowded schools and retirements and resignations.

The school division is now expecting more than 3,500 new students for the 2010-11 school year, bringing the total to more than 78,000 division-wide. The division is also expected to open two new elementary schools and a high school by the fall of 2011.

“I am overjoyed to report there will be no reduction in force for any employee of Prince William County Public Schools next year,” stated Walts in the press release. “Due to the overwhelming teamwork and the generosity of budget managers, we will have a position for all current employees by the start of the next school year.”
