HAYMARKET, Va. -- A division of the Virginia Department of Health has recommended denying two applications for a new hospital in western Prince William County.

But the final decision has not yet been made.

Prince William Health System, which operates Prince William Hospital in Manassas, and Sentara Healthcare, which operates Potomac Hospital in Woodbridge, had both applied for state approval to build a new hospital in the Haymarket area.

In April, the Health Systems Agency of Northern Virginia, an advisory board, recommended approving Prince William Health System’s plan and denying Sentara’s plan.

The applications then went to the state’s Division of Certificate of Public Need, which has recommended denying both plans.

The division recommended denying the proposed hospitals in part because "the area is adequately served by existing and authorized healthcare services," according to a staff report on the proposals.

Last week, Sentara Healthcare withdrew its application.

Prince William Health System officials are still pursuing their proposal.

On their website, myhaymarkethospital.org, Prince William Health System officials are urging area residents to support their proposal.

“While the denial out of Richmond is a setback, a final decision will not be made until the state conducts another fact finding hearing on the matter,” Prince William Health System officials said in a statement posted on the hospital’s website.

That hearing will be held Thursday at the State Corporation Commission Building in Richmond. The meeting is open to the public, but it is not a public hearing, state officials said.

State officials are accepting public comments through June 30, according to the Prince William Health System website.

Prince William Health System's proposal is to build a 60-bed hospital next to the Heathcote Health Center, near the intersection of U.S. 15 and Interstate 66.

If approved, the hospital would open in 2015.
